Essay

The work's aim is a comprehensive analysis of the tradition and innovation in the poetic heritage of Yosano Akiko, primarily on the material of the most famous collection of her poetry of tanka genre "The Tangled Hair" ("Midaregami", 1901). The work consists of three sections. The first section examined in detail the history of the origin, formation, aesthetic basis of Japanese romanticism, and the role and place of the poet's work in this literary movement. In addition, the process of Yosano Akiko's formation as a poetess was examined in detail. The examples of the reaction of critics contemporary of the poet to the publication of the collection "Tousled Hair" were provided as well. Also, the section analyzes the position of the traditional poetic tanka genre at the end of the 19th at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the achievements of "The New Poetry Society" in reforming and updating the genre. The work is aimed at further research of the late work of Yosano Akiko and its role in updating the traditional Japanese poetic tanka genre.
