Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the subject of major phonetic criteria of compound forming and functioning in Modern English. This is largely due to the experimental method that determined and systematized the most typical accentual-rhythmic models of compounds which have appeared in the language within the last decade. The significant attention is given to the study of prosodic features of compounds in speech communication. The results of the auditorial and electroacoustic analyses provided the paramount acoustic parameters of compound realization in the integrity of the objective acoustic structure of speech and through the mechanism of correlations between compounds and the complex nature of speech communication. It consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusions, list of references and an appendix. Chapter 1 presents a general survey of the key works in the field, a great deal of attention being paid to the main tendencies in formation of the innovative compounds. This is followed by a dee p analysis of the major phonetic mechanisms of building compounds and introducing them into the language system as the elements of the communicative potential of speech.
