The thesis sets out to provide a comprehensive analysis of language means and pragmatic functions of the Introducing component in three kinds of reported speech: direct, indirect and represented. The study of numerous types of introducing components provided grounds for their differentiating according to the following characteristics: 1)structural; 2)positional; 3)semantic; 4)graphic; 5)pragmatic. Major tendencies have been traced revealing unification and differentiation of the reported speech introducing components, contactivity and distantivity, subjectivity and dramatisation.
