. The dissertation focuses on the analysis of anoma-lies as pivotal elements of postmodernist literary texts, whose objective is to determine cognitive mechanisms of their emergence and textual functio-ning. It is revealed that through textual anomalies external and internal textual tension is manifested. From the conceptual perspective the mechanism of creating textual anomalies in English postmodernist literary prose is mainly based on the interaction (overlapping, superposition or blending) of textual worlds through their subject-object or space-time focal points, and may be also based on the coexis-tense of parallel textual worlds whose possible points of contact are reconstructed by the reader. Basic functional characteristics of textual anomalies in English postmodernist literary prose are: ironical characterization of a personage as a textual world subject, textual play on the addressee in the author-reader dialogue in literary communication through manipulating the symbolics of textual worlds c ontact
