The dissertation deals with a topical issue in the typological study of kindred languages that of determining the functional characteristics of East-Slavonic non-equivalent and background lexis. The composition and structure of Ukrainian, Russian and Byelorussian non-equivalent lexis have been analysed with regard to the criteria for contrasted languages non-equivalent lexis selection. The suggested criterion of peculiar national and ethnical connotations presence or absence in the names of things and animals (zoonemes) reinterpreted to denote human beings allowed to classify the backround lexis of the contrasted languages.
