Petryk T. The Syntagmatic and Paradigmatic Peculiarities of the Ergative Verbs in Modern English.

The dissertation highlights the peculiarities of the category of ergativity in Modern English, its central and peripheral means of expression. On the base of dictionary definitions the classification of the ergative verbs was carried out according to their etymology and derivational patterns. In terms of syntaxemes there was described the structure of the transitive and intransitive sentence patterns with ergative verbs. There was proved that on the deep structure level ergativity of the languages of ergative type and that of the English (nominative) language are isomorphic. The functional-semantic field of ergativity was modelled and paradigmatic relations of its elements were stated.
