Essay

The karyotypes of 16 species оf Unionidae in the fauna of Ukraine are described. Conservatism of family's chromosome sets (n=19, 2n=38, NF=76) is proved. The results of the comparative karyological analysis of Unionidae at different taxonomical levels performed by means of dispersion and hierarchic cluster analyses are presented. The possibility of adapting a karyotape as a differentiating and integrating feature in the systematics of family is established. There were revealed the polyploidy, aneuploidy, chromosome aberrations in the tissues of gonads and gills of animals from different river basins.
