The thesis is focused on peculiarities of language designation of smile as a component of nonverbal behaviour. Given the results of lexicographic and fiction data research, the paper determines the main types of language units used for denoting smile in Modern English, reveals specificity of their semantic organization, suggests the ways of their classification. In the thesis lexical units indicating qualitative characteristics of smile are systematized; their functional peculiarities are defined from the emotivity theory viewpoint. Proceeding from the interrelation between emotive and intensifying potentials of nominations of smile, the role of these units in creating the pragmatic effect of fiction text expressiveness is substantiated.
