Essay

It has been established that nitric oxide decreased the force sensitivity of SM contractile apparatus to Ca2+. This effect is due to the direct effect of NO on the contractile proteins. Decreasing the force sensitivity of SM contractile apparatus to Ca2+ is due to NO interaction with critical sulfhydryl groups of the smooth muscle contractile proteins. Nitric oxide has been shown to cause changes of enzymatic activity of the smooth muscle contractile proteins, myosin and actomyosin. Such changes are similar to those occurring at modificating myosin SH-groups.
