Essay

Linguistic-rhetorical analysis of modern Labour discourse is completed on the material Tony Blair's speeches, ministers of the Labour Cabinet and party documents of the second half of the 20th century. Analysis of anthropological, cognitive and social factors, which make an impact on communication, made it possible to distinguish such written and oral types of Labour discourse as speeches, interviews, debates in Parliament, manifestoes, slogans, posters and the discourse of the Internet. Lexical, grammatical, stylistic and rhetorical means of impact on the addressee are studied: lexical units of slogans and posters; lexemes as the most popular lexical means of speech impact; metaphor as the most frequently used stylistic device; antithesis and repetition as the main means of persuasion and argumentation. The study also deals with the analysis Tony Blair's idiolect, which is the component of modern Labour discourse. Major characteristics of prime-minister's idiolect are described.
