Essay

The dissertation studies the stems of English prefixal verbs used as economic terms, examined through determining their structural, semantic, pragmatic and functional organization. The examination of prefixal verb stems prоceeds from basic root words of derivational chains towards their cognate derivatives. Prefixal verbs are formed according to general language norms on the basis of prefixal derivational patterns current in Modern English. The results obtained show the decrease of borrowed verb-forming prefixes within English economic terminology. Prefixal verb stems form noun and adjective stems by means of suffixation and conversion, being characterized by a considerable word-formative potential. Derivational chains containing prefixal verb stems do not exceed five tacts. Basic root words of derivational chains are represented by nouns, adjectives and verbs of different semantic classes.
