Essay

The dissertation is concerned with the criminological study of organized crime and issues of fighting it in Poland and Ukraine. On the basis of system approach, a definition of the organized crime has been proposed. The study relies on achievements of the present-day criminological theory, provisions of the criminal law, an analysis of statistical data, it takes into account international experience in fighting organized crime. The structure and special characteristics of organized crime, as well as the process of its formation and patterns of development, have been elucidated. Basic areas of activities of organized crime groups and peculiarities of work of the law-enforcement bodies in opposing this dangerous social-and-legal phenomenon have been considered. The necessity of cooperation within the international community in fighting organized crime has been substantiated and the ways of developing such cooperation have been analyzed. Measures towards upgrading the legal framework for fighting organized crime and the practice of its application have been suggested, as well as ways to improving Polish-Ukrainian collaboration in fighting organized crime.
