The object is civil society as a phenomenon and a theoretical and historical process of conceptualization thereof, the aim is definition of the concept of "civil society" by analysis of relationship between the phenomena of civil societies with theoretical and conceptual substantiation thereof; the methods are dialectical, analysis, synthesis, system approach, comparative, theoretical modelling, abstraction; novelty are substantiation of the peculiarity of fenomenal expression of the idea of civil society in the history and theory of political thought; results: the concept of "civil society", its evolution, structural arrangement, historical and theoretical trends in conceptualization of the idea of civil society in Ukraine are determined; introduced into political science and history of political thought courses; fields: practice, professional training.
