The poetics of V. Hugo’s work is analyzed in the integrity of common Romantic traits, national peculiarities and manifestations of the author’s individuality. The author’s image is viewed as the key feature of the whole novel. The universalizing concept of the genre presupposes reconstruction of the past through mastering various cultural languages of different epochs. Antiquity, medieval city and clerical culture make up various layers of both V.Hugo’s novel and its monumental prototype. A new vision of history displayed in the novel includes a specific «coding» of artistic languages in the cultural space as well as its integral perception
