Popok A. Ukrainian Settlements in the Far East as a historical and ethno-cultural phenomenon (the end of XIX -XX centuries).

Ways of formation and particularities of activities of the Ukrainian settlements in the Far East (by the example of Green Field and Manchuria) from the end of XIX century till present days are analysed in this work based on the wide range of searches. With use of historical, sociologyc and interdisciplinary methods it has uncovered problems of preserving ethnic identity of Ukrainians in this region. Reasons and course of the Ukrainian emigration to the Far East, specific features of the economic life, as well as forms and means of ethnic self-identification of the Ukrainian settlers are reviewed. The autor has proposed his own opinion concerning specific character of settlement of the Far Eastern territories by Ukrainians, he has developed the periodisation of public, cultural and political life of Ukrainians in the region, that is divided into some periods as follows: 1)from first settlements to 1905; 2) from 1905 to 1917;3) from 1917 to 1922; 4) from 1922 to 1931;5) from 1931 to 1933 the period of socalled "Ukrainisation"; 6) from 1933 to the beginning of 1990s; 7) from the beginning of 1990s to nowadays.
