Essay

The dissertation is devoted to an epithet in modern English tropic. The scientific novelty of research is defined by the new approach to interpretation tropics, which is understood as system-structural macrofield formation submitted by separate partially crossed fields. New the treatment of an epithet as a primary track in aspect of genesis and as system-forming centre tropics is. The semantic classification of epithets is resulted which are divided on two basic classes: usually-associative and occasionaly-associative. The usually-associative epithets are divided on two subclasses - constant and descriptive-estimated. Among occasionaly-associative epithets, hybrid formations arising as a result of crossing of a field of epithets with fields others tropes, differ metaphorical, comparative, lytotic/hyperbolic, metonimical, periphrastical, oxymoronic and ironical epithets. In the terms of word formation epithets can be simple, derivative and complex - derivative words, and also represent the word collocations, integrated in a complex word, and offers of various types. The structural models of semantic classes of complex epithets are determined. The role of an epithet in реализации of the pragmatic orientation of the text (on a material of the texts of fiction and some magazine-journal genres) is investigated
