The aim of the dissertation is to research romanticism as a method of comprehending the essence of state and nation as represented in the political and legal conceptions of the German thinkers in the 18 - 19 centuries (Kant, Fichte, Hegel and Schelling ). The criteria of political romanticism have been thoroughly researched and one's own definition of political romanticim has been elaborated. Some convergent features in West-European and Ukrainian romanticism have been researched. The influence of the political romanticism upon the shaping of state-building in Ukraine has been shown.
