Chuvpylo L. Oriental Studies in the Kharkiv University (1805-1917)

The object of study - the european and world scientific oriental studies. The purpose of study is the all-round complex analysis of the Kharkiv university oriental studies before October 1917 in a context of a history of home and world oriental studies. Historical-genetic, historical -comparative, synchronous and diachronous methods have been used. The dissertation is devoted to the history of Oriental Studies in the Kharkiv University before October 1917 (1805-1917). In the dissertation the rise of Oriental Studies in the Kharkiv University has analyzed, the main trends of Oriental education and studying has determined and considered, the evolution of scientific thought of the Kharkiv orientalists has followed. It is proved that Kharkiv University Oriental Studies only at the initial stage of its development went on the main stream of Russian Oriental Studies, being under the influence of the state needs in this field. Since 1835 its development was influenced by the internal factors mainly, which were connected with the evolution of scholarity thoughts in fields of Oriental Studies, history and comparative linguistic and with the needs of education. There were two main trends in the Kharkiv University Oriental Studies - historical (on the World History Chair) and philological (on the Comparative linguistic Chair). It has shown in the dissertation that the Kharkiv University was the one of the main centers of Oriental science and education in Russian Empire, and University scholars made a valuable contribution to the becoming of Home and World Oriental Studies as the special field of the humanities.
