Essay

The thesis is devoted to the study of the key national concepts in the British language picture of the last century. The work aims to determine and describe major concepts and values for the British, to study changes in the value system in Britain during the 20th century and the way these changes are represented in the English language. The thesis also sets a task to trace the way human conceptualization and categorization are represented in the vocabulary as well as the method this vocabulary can be analyzed from the cognitive point of view. Major nationally-marked concepts which help to understand British national character and ethnic peculiarities of the British mentality are represented as four lexic- semantic fields where the key concept is the core of field. On the basis of analysis of an extensive range of scientific publications and dictionaries the conclusion is made that individualism, class, prosperity and freedom correspond to major nationally-marked concepts of the British language pictureof the world.
