The thesis is devoted to the investigation of 237 field isolates of polioviruses isolated in Ukraine in 1994-1999. The aim of the study was to describe biological properties of wild and vaccine-like poliovirus strains and to determine their similarity. Typing and intratypic differentiation of isolated strains by means of poly- and monoclonal antibodies demonstrated the presence of vaccine-like, wild and intermediate (DR) strains of all three serotypes in Ukraine. Predominant bentonite variants among isolates of different origin were determined and cluster analysis of isolated strains was used to reveal their antigenic and sorption similarity. The utility of the bentonite assay for the intratypic differentiation of field isolates of type 1 polioviruses is substantiated.
