The dissertation focuses on semantic, structural and pragmatic aspects of the designation units in Old English epic works and modern British fantasy novels. The research is carried out in the framework of conceptual metaphor and conceptual integration theories. The basic mythic concepts are verbalised by means of the secondary designation units marked by mythopoetic imagery, possessing similar semantics and containing variants of standard social situations' scripts in their inner form. The units' imagery results from integration of closely related concepts and is determined by the mythic principle of identifying a linguistic sign as a referent object.
