3. The dissertation focuses on the study of vowel phonemes' functioning before consonant [r] in Modern German prepared and spontaneous speech. The vowel phonemes' functioning before consonant [r] is viewed from diachronic and synchronic perspectives. Functioning of the system of vowel phonemes before consonant [r] in speech is proved to be different from their functioning in codified pronunciation norm. The vowel system functioning is conditioned by the consonant [r] which follows a vowel, every allophone of the phoneme [r] having its own specificity in realization of qualitative and quantitative vowel characteristics. Functioning of the system of vowel phonemes before [r] assumes the appearance of new vowel phonemes and redistribution of the German vowel phoneme system within a definite synchronic period.
