Essay

The thesis explores sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects of the use of slang in present-day American English, and specifically in mainstream American press. It outlines the most commonly used models of word-formation in printed media. The thesis also examines sociolinguistic factors behind the use of slang in media-discourse, types of text that enhance its emotive, expressive and evaluative characteristics, as well as its pragmatics in newspapers and magazines that goes a long way toward explaining why slang terms have become increasingly common over the past several decades.
