Essay

The dissertation is the first attempt to give integral characteristic of Anatol Vakhnyanyn's versatile activities as a composer, conductor, singer, social figure and writer, a great deal of new materials extracted from archives being introduced. Based on this material, Vakhnyanyn's views of varies fields of musical art (musical aesthetics, folklore, spiritual music, theatre, musical theory) have been systematized. Due to the newly found archive materials, the scope of Vakhnyanyn's activies as composer has been expanded, which enables us to characterize his composer style as based on the principles of romanticism. A special emphasis is made on the the relationship between Vakhnyanyn's musical composing and musical research. In the evolution of musical culture of Halychyna, Vakhnyanyn's activities contributed to the transition from the amateur stage of composer activities to its further advancement on professional basis.
