Essay

The object of the research is praise utterances in contemporary British and American discourse. The aim of the research is a system study of praise utterances as specific speech acts characterized by a complex of cognitive, communicative, pragmatic, social-cultural, verbal and non-verbal dimensions. The methods of the research are speechact, conceptual-situational, frame, ethnopragmatic, functional-semantic analysys. Theoretical results and novelty: praise utterances are defined as the specific kind of speech activity within communicative paradigm; the pragmatic status of praise utterances as polyillocutionary speech acts are determined; direct and indirect praise utterances are studied; typical features of interactional frames are described. Practical results: teaching lexicology, stylistics. The sphere of application: lexicology and lexicography.
