Odarchuk N. Semantic and Pragmatic Peculiarities of Utterances of Refusal in the English Discourse of Fiction

The thesis deals with the study of structural, semantic, pragmatic and discoursive peculiarities of the utterances of refusal in the English fiction. The integral methodology applied allows revealing the functions of the utterances of refusal through the categories of evaluation, negation, opposition and the personality factor in Modern English. The approach used enables stating semantic prototypes and derivatives of the utterances of refusal, as well as their main and complementary illocutionary forces. As a result several types of refusal discourses, namely extrinsic to conflict, conflict-preventive and conflict-generative ones were singled out. In the paper a conclusion is made about the potentialities of interaction concord and interaction discord by refusing and a bipolar model of the dialogue of refusal is suggested.
