Essay

The works of G.Puccini, the leading Italian opera composer of the end of the 19th beginning of the 20th centery, are examined in the dissertation as an allencompassing artistic expression of a transitional era. The historic import and artistic scale of this expression allows one to characterise his works as a poetic music theatre, which logically results from the evolution of the Western European opera in the first quater of the 20th century. In the dissertation the historic link is made between the music theatre of Puccini and innovative operatic tendencies in works of G.Verdi, R.Wagner, the Italian composers-veristes.
