Essay

The dissertation focuses on peculiarities of word-building functions pertaining to verb compound stems in Modern German medical terminology. Derived verb stems were analyzed starting from compound stems towards verbal derivative stems of noun-terms and adjectives correlated with them. The study has proved the existence of substantial valency ties of loan-verb suffixes in derived verb stems production. Word-building chains, derived verbs being their prior links, include terms grouped by their common terminological meaning, expressed in the derived verb compound stem. Word-building chains, comprising two successive word-building acts, are typical of German medical terminology. The study of terms by organizing them in word-building chains, which, in their turn, form the word-building families highlights the established word-building and semantic relations between the terms that form word-building families under study.
