Essay

The dissertation has been concerned with one type of collocations, namely fixed verbo-nominal phrases of the type to give a smile, to have a look, to make a suggestion which are highly productive and have a high frequency rate of occurrence in present-day English. It is an attempt at a thorough analysis of lexical collocability of their components with particular reference to the linguistic problem of lexical patterning and collocational properties of words. The study of collocational properties of verbs of broad semantics do, give, get, have, keep, make, put, take in fixed verbo-nominal phrases has been undertaken in the dissertation on the principles of the corpus-based lexico-grammar. Lexico-semantic groups of nouns collocating with these function verbs are set up. Paradigmatic relations between fixed verbo-nominal phrases established due to lexical variability of their verbal components (synonyms and converses) are also traced in the dissertation.
