Essay

The paper combines cognitive and discursive approaches to the study of ecology-related communication and offers an all-embracing analysis of the environmental discourse as a phenomenon that includes both linguistic and extralinguisric components. The research focuses on concepts that constitute the semantic base of the environmental discourse and ways of their verbalisation in modern English as well as means of realisation of the two major communicative strategies within the environmental discourse. The thesis provides substantiation that makes it possible to single out ecology-related communication as a separate type of discourse and suggests a definition of the environmental discourse. Realisation of the strategy of pressure in the environmental discourse is characterised by the following peculiarities: the use of means of emotional impact on the addressee - short sentences, imperatives, negative constructions, emotionally marked words; the use of graphical means of information presentation; combining of verbal and non-verbal behaviour. The thesis constitutes the first attempt to conduct an all-embracing analysis of ecology-related communication. Further research can be concentrated on singling out other concepts, axiological units and symbols, typical of the environmental discourse as well as the comparative analysis of mass- and scientific-oriented environmental discourse. Key words: environmental discourse, concept, environmental awareness, axiological units, argumentation, communicative strategy, addresser-addressee configuration.
