The thesis highlights one of the main types of translational transformations, called transformation of nominalisation, in translation theory, and in translation from English into Ukrainian and from Ukrainian into English, in particular. This is the first substantial research work on the topic. The research is mostly based upon linguistic works on stylistic and semantic characteristics of nominal structures, as well as nominalisation processes undergoing within one language. Various research works on grammatical transformations in translation have also been used by the author of this thesis. To get a comprehensive answer to the problem, the definition and thorough description of nominalisation phenomenon in translation have been given, the reasons and conditions of transformation of nominalisation have been revealed and analysed, the main types of transformation of nominalisation have been found out, and a quantitative analysis of the latter has been made. A statistical analysis has shown that in the English-Ukrainian direction of translation the largest number of transformations of nominalsation occurs when turning English structures with formal predicate link-verbs into fully nominalised Ukrainian nominal structures. This accounts for 26% of all transformations analysed. In the Ukrainian-English direction of translation, the largest number of transformations of nominalsation occurs when turning Ukrainian notional finite verbs as homogeneous parts of the sentence into English Participles I which become partially nominalsed elements (29%). According to the quantitative analysis in the English-Ukrainian translation, transformations of nominalisation constitute 72% of the total amount of transfornations of nominalisation in both directions of translation. This fact and the fact that in English-Ukrainian translation full transformations of nominalisations occur more often, as compared to the Ukrainian-English direction of translation, indicate that the Ukrainian language appears to be more nominal as comparedto English. Key words: transformation of nominalisation, nominal element, static sememe, verbal element, dynamic sememe, complex analytical verbal construction, long and explicit verbal structure, compact and implicit nominal phrase, partial nominalisation, full nominalisation.
