Essay

The thesis deals with problems of composition and artistic integrity of the cycle. A close analysis of Berlin's Autograph and Original Edition and the principles of symmetry and rhetorical amplification discovered therein has enabled the author to offer a new sequence of counterpoints and canons that shapes the space-time model of the cycle as a synthesis of the external two-part symmetric form, the inner form relative to the matter (7-9-part rhetorical disposition) and the temporal (intonation and performing) form.
