Essay

The object is the novel written by U.Samchuk "Temnota" in the context of his trilogy "Ost" as compared to "Archipelag Gulag" by A.Solzhenitsyn. The aim is to reveal the typological similarities, correspondences and divergences in the creation of the image of world and the concept of hero in the prose of Samchuk and Solzhenitsyn on the subject of prisons and forced-labour camps. The methods are: typological-comparative, comparative-historical, biographical and hermeneutic. The results are the following: for the first time in the history of Ukrainian study of literature there has been given a typological-comparative analysis of the works on the subject of prisons and forced-labour camps of Ukrainian and Russian writers, such as Samchuk and Solzhenitsyn, the notion of poetry in the literature of the subject of prisons and forced-labour camps has been specified, accentuation is given to its national colouring.
