Essay

Object - cointercalation in graphite nitrate and thermal deintercalation of modified graphite nitrates. Aim - to establish main factors leading to thermally stable compounds on the modification of graphite nitrate with organic solvents, and to find quantitative dependences of thermal expansion of modified products. Methods are X-ray phase analysis, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with the volume measurements, quantum-chemistry calculations. The treatment of initial graphite nitrate with a number of organic solvents was established to give new thermally stable cointercalation compounds. The stability of graphite nitrate was first evaluated; the hypothesis of stabilization due to the hydrogen bonding with charged species was put forward. Thermal deintercalation was investigated, the model for it was proposed, and the kinetic parameters of deintercalation were established.
