The dissertation deals with the aspects of the educational and philanthropic activity of Greek traders in the late 18th - to the middle of the 19th cent. (on the example of the Zosimas activity). The research reveals the preconditions, general tendencies and the evolution, the results of the Zosima brothers activity in context with social and political processes deploying in the Ottoman Empire and the changes in the state policy concerning Greek population on the territory of the Russian Empire and Italy. The activity of Zosima brothers testifies about their contribution to Greek ethno-cultural identity . The main forms of philanthropic activities are determined and analysed. First of all considerable finance was directed by the brothers for building and maintaining of Greek churches, hospitals, spiritual and educational institutions; for help to poor Greeks and orphans, scientific societies; scholarships for students. The collection of books "hellenic library" was published with the financial help ofZosima and was given to Greek schools and libraries free of charge. This publication was known all over the Greek World.
