Essay

Optical properties of alkali-borate glasses doped with mercury-like ions are investigated. The irradiation by powerful UV laser irradiation causes stable changes of optical properties of the glasses, which can be used for optical data storage. On the basic of spectral investigations, optimal conditions are determined for optical data recording and reading with investigated glasses. The effect of optical erasing is found on the investigated glasses for the first time.A model is proposed for the processes of optical data recording in alkali-borate glasses doped with indium. According to the model, spectral properties of the glasses investigated can be interpreted of the assumption that three types of activator indium centres are involved in the processes. Optical properties of the glass are determined by relative concentration of impurity centres of various types. A new material - alkali-borate glasses doped with cadmium and with mercury - is synthesised for first time.
