The dissertation is a study of the valency, syntagmatic, paradygmatic and epidygmatic characteristics of English colour names. The inventarization of the semantic field of colour words has been investigation results are substantiated by statistic analysis of the data obtained. The semantic system of colour words according to the investigated dictionaries differs greatly from that studied through text analysis. Basic colour words are characterized by a larger amount of syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations and by a wider epidygmatic network than those denoting the hues of basic colours.
