Essay

Examination of patients with normal tension glaucoma revealed significant increase of the level of endothelin-1 in the blood plasma. Both the use of Betaxolol (Betoptic-S) and surgical interventions in the majority of cases resulted in a stable reduction of IOP down to tolerable degree, being accompanied by an improved visual field and a lower level of endothelin-1 in the blood plasma. Therefore it is possible to recommend hypotensive treatment of patients with normal tension glaucoma irrespective of its type, thereby alleviating the process of glaucoma.
