Essay

The thesis is focused on the topical issues of re-socialisation of offenders who serve their sentences or had been released from corrections. The research contains the social and legal characteristics of the processes of re-socialisation. A new view of the historical development of the penitentiary system of Ukraine with specific periods is presented. The thesis contains the analyses of prison as a total institution. Factors, which influence human personality in total institutions, are analyzed. These factors relate to imprisonment as well as alternative sanctions. Attention is also paid to the term of the penitentiary system, its elements, and experience of the Western states in the sphere of providing of social services for prisoners and convicts. Ideas for reforms of the Ukrainian penitentiary system are proposed where offender re-socialisation is considered a complex branch of the public social policy.
