Julia M. Prosodic Interference in English Discourse (Experimental Phonetic Research on the Speech of Arabic-English Bilinguals).

The research is devoted to the complex analysis of prosodic characteristics of spontaneous English speech of Arabic-English bilinguals as a distinct group of non-native speakers of English (NNS). It is aimed at the study of identifying prosodic features of Arabic-English bilinguals, at describing interference phenomena and gender differences in the prosody of spontaneous English speech of Arabic-English bilinguals in the communicative situations of political TV interview and talk show. Modern multifunctional software made it possible to carry out the acoustic analysis of different communicative types of sentences of non-native and native speakers of English, to obtain a set of interference features and foreign accent features not caused by interference in the prosody of NNS. Interference phenomena were registered at the level of speech melody, loudness, tempo, and acoustic correlates - pitch, intensity, and duration.
