Research is devoted to the explanation of the peculiarities of Zen Buddhism's genesis and development. Analyzing the opinions of foreign and national scientists, the author arrives at a conclusion that religious syncretism, whose underlying causes, dynamics, essence and internal structure are presented in the first section, is one of the general properties of the religion's evolution.
