Essay

The isothermal sections (670 K) of the {Ti, Zr, Y}-{Si, Ge}-Sb and Ti-{Si, Ge}-Bi phase diagrams in the whole concentration range were constructed by means of X-ray phase, X-ray structural and partially microstructure analyses. The existence of three compounds was confirmed (for one of them for the first time were determined structural parameters) and 24 new ternary and 2 quaternary compounds were found in these and related systems. The crystal structures of all new intermetallic compounds were determined. New structure type Tm5Si2Sb2 belongs to the homologous series based on an intergrowth of -Po-, CuAl2- and U3Si2 -type stabs. The general formula R(m+3n+l)X2mX'2n was deduced for all possible structures which are based on the above mentioned types. All known ternary antimonides crystallize in 7 structure types and form 4 series of isotypic compounds: W5Si3, Nb5SiSn2, -K2UF6 and Tm5Si2Sb2. The shortening of the distances M-Sb, R-Sb and Sb-Sb (up to 12%) indicate the presence of the covalence in addition to metallic bonding. The melting temperatures of some intermetallic compounds were established. Investigation of the magnetic properties of antimonides with W5Si3 and Nb5SiSn2 structure types were showed the Pauling paramagnetism.
