Essay

The thesis deals with the typological research of kinship terms (KT) from the point of view of their structure and semantics. The material includes forty languages that belong to ten different families. The thesis includes typological and quantitative methods, distributional and componential analysis. The methodology of KT research was worked out. The morphological structure of kinship terms shows that there are 6 possible structural types. The degree of KT structural productivity in typological aspect was determined. There was produced the semantic classification of KT. The polysemy coefficient was calculated. Five types of reciprocal KT were singled out. A number of implicational universals concerning morphological structure and semantics of KT was formulated.
