Essay

The thesis is devoted to the research of structural and pragmatic properties of fragmented lexical units (FLUs) in modern English-speaking media discourse. Fragmentation has been viewed as a productive word-building process, and the terminology related to it and the types of FLUs has been amended. The sources of FLUs in Modern English and the place of fragmentation in contemporary word-building have been defined, the productive FLU-forming patterns considered, certain regularities in their structure, prosody, spelling, graphic length and linguistic parameters crucial to forming a clipping as a type of FLUs discovered, pragmatic components of FLUs' meaning analysed, their functions in media discourse described and their cognitive orientation ascertained.
