Essay

The work is devoted to determination of reliable data for strength of grounds and to elaboration of the prognostication methods of their mutability while estimating the stability of landslide-dangerous slopes. For that purpose there was for the first time substantiated and practically examined the method of conducting investigation on a single-plane shift, while specimens are first compacted and saturated with water at the forecast vertical pressures by which the ground massif will be influenced as a result of developing water supply to the slope, and the critical value of shift resistance is determined at the very beginning of the ground break-down phase. For the water-saturated clayeygrounds there were elaborated methods for carrying out and processing the results of a single-plane shift on the basis of a new scheme of interdependence of physical and mechanical characteristics that enables to predict their mutability as a result of water supply to a slope. They were used for stability estimation ina number of landslide-dangerous slopes being placed in the Poltava region. The mathematical modeling of the single-plane ground shift process by means of solution the elastic-ductile task of nonlinear mechanics of grounds made it possible to define new peculiarities of this examination.
