Essay

The thesis focuses on the study of communicative-pragmatic and word-formation peculiarities of derivative illocutionary verbs in Modern English. The investigation has been carried out in the paradigm of speech act theory and word-formation studies, in the centre of which are the problems of creating utterances and their comprehension by the addressee, as well as the elucidation of the correlation between the use of derivatives, formed according to a particular derivational pattern, in speech acts of a certain pragmatic type and their influence on the addressee. The complex pragmatic and speech act analysis of derivative illocutionary verbs made it possible to reveal that a derivative has a great communicative potential orienting the speaker at a various meaningful use of the same word in different contexts. Thus, instead of mechanically operating with lexemes, the speaker creatively modifies them to express the thought adequately in each speech act. The study describes the dependence between the speaker's intentions and his use of particular strategies, tactics as well as word-formation means in speech acts of certain pragmatic types. It also investigates the frequency of derivatives belonging to a particular illocutionary class and the productivity of certain derivational patterns.
