The thesis focuses on the investigation of phraseological units (PhU) in German author's text and their role in the system of artistic expressive means. The research has been conducted on the analysis of the usual application of phraseological units in Joseph Roth's novels based upon their absolute expressive abilities as well as upon author's phraseological modifications (PhM) which intensify absolute and potential expressive PhU's abilities and produce additional variants of meaning enriching usual PhU with new expressive abilities.
