Essay

This dissertation focuses on the study of English academic linguistic discourse viewed from communicative and pragmatic perspectives of authorization as its starting point. The paper reveals pragmatic, metacommunicative, and evaluative components which constitute the semantic structure of authorization aimed to establish rhetorical norms within English academic discourse. The analysis of linguistic corpus highlights the author's key role in English academic discourse which realizes epistemic and attitudinal assessment of credibility by diverse linguistic means ranging from non-assertive to assertive markers of authorization. The paper reveals and proves their metacommunicative nature. Particular attention is paid to the representation of speech strategies that characterise the speaker as an authoritative / non-authoritative linguistic personality. Emphasized here are discursive and interpretive strategies and tactics used to construct a cooperative scholarly communication.
