Essay

This dissertation suggests a complex approach to the study of the speaker's self-presentation forms in political speech of German federal chancellors in the period after World War II, including the analysis of linguistic techniques of speech influence on the audience. In pragmatics the category of subject is viewed as an individual's self-presentation in a speech situation with the help of language means of semantic, syntactical and textual levels. The category of subject is regarded as an important influence factor on addressees of political speeches. The data of semantic and pragmatic analysis allowed to conclude that linguistic means of the speaker's identification in political speech are organized in strategies on the level of macrostructure. On the level of microstructure these means are combined into tactics of the speaker's self-presentation. Quantitative analysis of linguistic means of speaker's self-presentation made it possible to assert that the speaker's preferential use of "active" or "passive" self-presentation tactics depends on such pragmatic factors as communicative situation and audience the political speech is addressed to.
