Essay

The thesis is devoted to the linguistic study of etiquette in spontaneous virtual English communication. The paper aims to determine and describe characteristic features of chat communication, define the notion of netiquette, its basic rules and functions. The work argues for the particular role of paralinguistic components of communication, analyses verbal and non-verbal elements of netiquette, studies nicknames, names of chat rooms and virtual communities, topics of chat conversations as well as dynamic nature of basic netiquette under the influence of anthroponуmіс and toponуmic characteristics of cyberspace. The study of speech interaction in chat rooms made it possible to classify typical communicative strategies and tactics and identify traditional and new etiquette genres. The thesis also investigates unconscious and deliberate violations of netiquette rules, defines factors of miscommunication as well as ways of repairing communicative mistakes and avoiding conflicts.
